The trees are finally changing, some are still shedding leaves, some are staying green and some are completely bare. During this time of the year, I love to take a solo walk to find the beautiful crunchy leaves and take in the crisp air.

I was actually doing a little research on why the leaves change, because I don’t remember anything from Year 9 science and it’s quite interesting.

Basically, it’s all down to chemical processes that take place in the tree as the seasons change from summer to winter. In Autumn, there are changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll in them breaks down, the green colour disappears, and the yellow to orange colours become visible and give the leaves part of their autumnal brilliance.

So, I thought to myself: why not take this time to change as a person too? The leaves are changing, the weather is changing, everything is moving on and I should too. I know it’s traditional to wait until the beginning of a new year, month or season to signify a change but why wait? Why not decide to change on this random Wednesday afternoon?

I think it’s really important to keep growing and developing as a person. I like the idea of striving to improve, rather than completely changing your entire personality to something unnatural.

There are a couple of changes are habits I want to adapt and take on. Some of them I’m already doing and would like to do more, some of them I avoid, and some of them I barely do at all.

Take on more housework

Tackle blog admin

Read way more books

Make a new playlist

Be kinder every day

Smile at strangers

Try not to prejudge

Focus on the positives

Practise empathy

Become more aware of world events

Develop my independence

Pray more

Keep up with journal writing

Take advantage of free time

Experiment creatively

Show love more often

Be more courageous

Refuse to break promises

Check on my friends

Monitor my mental health

Stop saying “I’m tired” when you’re not tired
