Is Instagram Just for the Shallow?

I was talking to a friend the other day, and we got onto the subject of bloggers and Instagram. Now this is a subject I usually avoid with my friends, because I already know how they feel about blogs, which is why they don’t know I have one.

For many people, bloggers are just vain wannabe models who buy loads of clothes and write about the colour of them. In fact, there are bloggers around the world who are highly qualified creatives, sharing their passion on their own little corner of the internet and perhaps making a little money off it.

Anyway, when discussing Instagram with my friend, she mentioned that she doesn’t really see the point in sharing hundreds of photos of yourself just to receive a shower of compliments in the comments. I personally, don’t share as many photos of myself on my Instagram profile as I used to, so I can’t really say – but I’d love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments.

Here’s what I think. Social media is a free tool that’s pretty easy to use. It’s a way of communicating and sharing through phones and computers that has never been done before. It’s a way for creators to showcase the work their proud of, and others and share the things that make them happy. With everything in this world, there is a bit of a negative – bullying, social stalkers, becoming obsessed – but all those things don’t happen to every user, and everything on the internet is not totally and completely terrible.

If you have an Instagram account, you have a right to choose what you want to share. I’m quite a private person, I use Instagram to share my favourite photos and the occasional adventure, rather than all the intimate details of my life. Whereas there are some, that have an enormous following just based on their looks.

But does that make all Instagram users vain and obnoxious? Certainly not

I know I’ve harped on about the positives of social media before, and that’s because I don’t think it’s all bad. I don’t think bloggers just take a mirror selfie and upload it without any prior thinking, and I don’t think anyone who takes joy in preplanning their Instagram feed is insufferable.

Most social media platforms are there to be creative. They’re there to use, have fun with and share. Instagram happens to be one of my favourite places for sharing because there’s plenty of people on there who like pretty photos like me.

Like my friend, I know there are a lot of people out there that will never understand bloggers. They will never understand how they earn a living or work a “real” job. They struggle to fathom the idea of enjoying your choice of employment as being possible for some.

So, I don’t think Instagram is just for the vain. Some of the most creative people I have ever met have been through Instagram, I have seen it totally transform businesses and lives and bring joy (not just hate comments).

There are people out there who will never understand or like that idea, that’s just how it is.
