The New Year is now upon us, so let’s take a look at five ways you can get 2019 off to a great start. Now, of course, you’ll have set some goals and resolutions to achieve in the year ahead – even if you haven’t committed these to paper or formally thought things through, almost everybody contemplates their life at this time of year and considers what they are wanting to achieve in the year ahead.
Unfortunately, this is a time of year that most people suffer from a cold or flu, meaning they feel a little worse for wear after the party season and the flu season, which tends to leave people feeling like they don’t want to do anything at all. The first thing you might need to do is research the best flu remedies and order them online here so that you can get back on your feet and start the year as you mean to go on.
Now, let’s take a look at a few principles to help you get off to a good start:
1. FOCUS ON WHERE YOU WANT TO GO
In simple terms, if you don’t have an idea of the destination to which you wish to arrive, it will be very hard getting there. Consider getting on a plane where the pilot doesn’t know where he’s heading toward — if there’s no final destination in mind, the plane will just have to circle the skies (and eventually run out of fuel, so land somewhere random) or never leave the runway.
Similarly, if you were to think of this in a more nautical metaphor, you can see that a boat that doesn’t have a clear destination in mind will not be able to set a route, and therefore, will end up on whatever shore the tide takes it.
Many people live their lives without clear goals, and as a result they tend to get what life gives them rather than going after what they truly desire – because they don’t have that focal point in terms of final destination… they wander around like headless chickens, on the treadmill of life, making ends meet – rather than taking the action required to transform their lives and transport them to a whole new world.
2. PLAN A COURSE
Once you have decided on where it is you want to go, the next step is to plan a route and course of action to get you to where you want to be. Just because you have the end result in mind, and spend time visualising where it is you want to be, doesn’t mean you will get there – after all, if you are on a boat with a clear idea of the destination in mind, and go in the opposite direction you’re not going to get there; well, technically you might, but it would be a very long way around.
3. FOCUS ON EFFICIENCY
When it comes to planning your course and setting a route, you want to figure out the fastest and most efficient path to getting you from where you are to where you want to go. Consider how a GPS map will always tell you the fastest and most efficient way to get to your final destination – it will calculate millions of intricate details to calculate the fastest route.
Now, you might not have the same impetus or at least precision when it comes to mapping out your route – you can find the most efficient way to achieve a goal. The best way to do this is to write out a list of all the ways you could go about achieving your goal, and then, from there work out which is the most efficient.
It involves some very broad and quite creative blue sky thinking, at first, to consider all the options – but then these must be reined in to create a refined list of possibilities. You then want to pick the fastest and most effortless route to get to where you want to be.
4. CHUNK DOWN YOUR GOAL
The next step is to chunk down your goal, let’s say that you have now picked out your destination, devised a route that has considered the most efficient way to get you to where you want to be… we now want to look into the route in finer detail.
This is where the power of “chunking” comes in. It can feel overwhelming to have a massive goal, and often there are a number of steps in the process to achieving a sizeable goal. It’s a bit like climbing an old fashioned clock tower with its windy spiral staircase – you need to take it one step at a time, and over time, you will make your way to the top… but along the way you might need to stop and catch your breath if you feel dizzy.
Today, we all seem to want to take the lift rather than the stairs – but when it comes to life and achieving your dreams, you tend to have to take the stairs.
Therefore, it’s important to break down the journey into stages. It’s equally important to “just do it” as Nike recommends, for so many people spend time looking at the staircase without taking the first step. It’s only when you take that first step, and get in motion, that you start moving toward your goal… anything else is just procrastination.
5. TAKE ACTION
The final, and most important step is to take action. As stated above, it’s really important to get in motion and start making progress; you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step, just start with baby steps, and eventually, over time these baby steps will transport you far along the path toward your dreams.
The key point is to start small but start now. Don’t allow yourself to be paralysed by procrastination or perfectionism – get started today, take immediate action, even if it’s just a small step in the process… as this builds momentum, and the emotional power of progress will catapult you to great heights.
