The blogging industry is a wild place to work. There is just so much going on. I sometimes see myself as a blogger on the outside quite often, I don’t live anywhere near London, I’m not Instagram famous, don’t attend all the glamorous events and have met a handful of bloggers in person. Yet, I still class myself as a blogger and I like to keep up with the way the blogosphere is moving forward.
Instagram is the best way for me to keep up with bloggers, and find out which projects they’re working on, what brands they’re loving at the moment and which beauty products are the best. On social media, I constantly see bloggers breaking the barriers and paving their way through the industry, making a career for themselves from home and it’s really inspiring to see. They’re motivation.
Not everyone’s path is the same, and not everyone wants the same things. For example, a luxury blogger may dream of attending NYFW with a huge designer brand or flying to a private island for a week, while another may just want to visit a cool restaurant to review the experience. One thing I have realised though, is that it’s important to grab hold of every opportunity, and take it with a smile.
Not every opportunity suits every blogger. Sometimes I get emails with collaboration ideas that wouldn’t fit my blog in any way shape or form. Even though I may have to pass on this opportunity, I was still grateful to have received it in the first place.
But of the opportunities I do take on and accept, I’m so happy they come my way. Not every collaboration I do is paid, or includes a gift basket of goodies. Sometimes it’s just a link within a blog post, but I got to work with a brand I sincerely adore and that makes me happy.
I know that as a blogger with under 10k on Instagram, I won’t always get the big offers and I don’t expect a book deal to drop on my lap next week, but I’m so appreciative of the projects I get to work on and genuinely enjoy the process.
I love every step of a collaboration – from the planning, to the photography and even the promotion. Blogging is something I love to do, and to have other businesses and brands recognise my efforts and openly enjoy my content is the best feeling.
That’s why I take everything I get with a smile. When those opportunities come flying into my inbox, I’m so thankful to receive them. It means there’s a person out there who likes my blog and wants to work with me – how awesome is that?
There’s this whole network full of creatives, but one person out there chose your blog, or your Instagram page, or your portfolio to work with and trust in. It’s kind of a big deal.
This industry moves at lighting speed and so much goes on behind the scenes. Where one blogger may not fit for one project, another one will. So if sometimes comes my way (and it fits), I take it and work as hard as I can to create something cool. It could just be a cute IG caption or part of an outfit but it was still a project I was chosen to work on.
It’s also important not to compare. As I said, every blogger is different, some have more followers and reach than others and therefore receive a “bigger” offer than others. But that doesn’t meant the offer you get isn’t just as good, and it doesn’t mean you won’t work hard to that point and receive something you consider even better.
They always say, where one door closes, another one opens. I think if you stop feeling appreciative for the chances you receive, even the tiny ones, you lose an element of passion for what you do. If I just threw out sponsored posts left, right and centre with no real thought (other than the paycheque), I’d find blogging so boring. But when you get excited about a project, when you’re thankful to be selected for a campaign and work hard on some new content, it breathes life into the blogging journey.
Showing gratitude is important every single day, but especially so when you’ve been single out to receive something special.
What opportunities have you received in the blogger industry?
